Bella Poldark The Poldark Saga Winston Graham 9780330491495 Books

Adventure, intrigue, romance, heartbreak, mystery, humor! Amazing how the author evokes so many emotions into one book. I tried to nurse this
book to make it last, as it was the final book in the Poldark series. How I wish Winston Graham were still alive as I would write and tell him
how very much I enjoyed all 12 books in the series! I've NEVER read anything with so much compassion, love, and intrigue. This final book in the series had the most humor, too. I end with a sadness that this series is over. I feel the Poldark family and all the people who intertwined with them were real--like my family--and now we are separated. I hold all the memories of each one of them in my heart and rejoice in having had this wonderful, beautiful experience of sharing life with them! The descriptions throughout of characters and places were breathtaking. Truly, Winston Graham was a talented and wonderful writer. I'm blessed to have had the chance to have read some of his gifted writings. I've read a lot, but nothing so breathtaking and thought provoking as these!

Bella Poldark The Poldark Saga Winston Graham 9780330491495 Books Reviews

This book goes darker into human nature then it needs too. It becomes more a murder mystery. It was not needed and was disturbing. It was not fitting with the rest of the books. Since this is the last in the Poldark series in general terms majorities of the male characters chased women. The women in the end accepted infidelity and being lied to in the name of love. Only one wife stood up for herself and left her husband. But she was unfaithful with her first husband and many where pressuring her to go back to him. And Ross being Ross said he wanted her. After reading the whole series, I wish the characters were more diverse and greater character development. I loved the relationship between Delmeza and Ross. Steven and Valentine lest favorite. In the end a good series but just wishing for more stronger female characters.
It has been a joy to read the Poldark novels. The thread of drama that ties them together and the wonderful characters evolving through the years provides a near perfect story. The backdrop of Cornwall was fascinating and familiar to me as I was born in Ironwood, Michigan, a part of the Upper Peninsula settled by Cornish immigrant miners. where the pastie (meat pie) is still a favorite. I was thrilled to see a reference to this region in the first book where one of Poldark's miners made reference to copper mining on the coast of Lake Superior. Another aspect of the series was the French war and how it seemed to go on forever and the terrible impact it had for so many.
This is the twelfth and final book in the late Winston Graham's series on life in late-eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Cornwall, "Poldark." There are a few slower moments in some of the earlier novels, but this one speeds along as the author ties up all the loose ends that are bound to occur in a multi-generational saga like this. For fans of the series, this could not disappoint and the fact that you're reading a review of the twelfth installment makes you by definition a fan. The characters in this opus by now are part of the Cornish landscape and the reader is part of the Poldark clan, privy to as much of their experience as any insider. Still, the characters retain a respectable reserve and the reader must necessarily keep his or her distance. It took three months to complete reading, a period that will henceforth be known as "Poldark time," signifying that not much else got done.
It is so refreshing to read good English. The novel is perfectly edited. There are no distractions such as obscenities, misspelled words, misuse of vocabulary or impossible sentence structure. You move effortlessly from line to line; character to character; and story to story. The scenes are so well written that you feel and think that you are there. You are there on the cliffs of Cornwall, in the valleys, in the rooms, and in the theater. What a perfect novel. Even though this is the 12th book, you are not subjected to a retelling of the story yet nothing is assumed. You are briefly reminded of some of the history of the character when appropriate. This is done seamlessly and I was grateful.
This series of books by Winston Graham has made a non-reader of novels into a dedicated fan. Sad that these beautiful stories have ended but I will enthusiastically devour anything else written by this marvelous author.
I cannot recommend his writings highly enough.....intrigue, romance, wars, history, suspense and downright fun! To find something so engaging as to keep me from pressing duties was both frustrating and exciting......a rare feat in these times.
This final book in Winston Graham's Poldark series set in the late 1700s and early 1800s in Cornwall. The life of Bella Poldark, youngest daughter of Ross and Demelza, takes readers beyond Cornwall into a world of love and marriage, conspiracies, and intrigue. The history of England and Europe continue as the backdrop for the lives and loves of the Poldark, Enys and Warleggan children. Graham's impeccable attention to historical detail, from mundane clothing styles and agricultural practices to high finance, banking and land dealings of the aristocracy. Foreign machinations and wars transport readers to times and places and events that could flesh out any history textbook. The social lives of the wealthy and the peasants alike come into constant interplay as the Poldark Family saga unfolds, collapses and rises again. The author's distinct writing style is both didactic without being pedantic sprinkled with dreamily poetic passages. To read any (or all) of the Poldark books is to be enchanted and left with indelible visual memories.
