I'm not much of a sports fan, and I'm not much a book reviewer but I feel like I have to say something. I went to a baseball game the other day for the first time in years and it made me want to read a unique story about baseball. So I found this book through some Google searches and it was a wild, funny, sweet, horrifying, important ride from start to finish.

I have a thing for books that are just brilliant without announcing they're going to be, and that's definitely what The Dreyfus Affair is. The prose is simple and laugh-out-loud funny with just enough big words thrown in. It doesn't feel too deep -- until suddenly it is, somehow, as if by accident (though it is too masterfully done to be an accident). The love story is certainly the center of the action, but it doesn't get too sentimental, which perfectly fits the tone. Even so, the book managed to make me grin like a buffoon and pace around my house in stress, as I truly felt every bit of the story (even the parts I didn't want to).

If I could, I would probably give it 4.5/5 namely because I wish Suzie Dreyfus' story had been wrapped up a little cleaner. I vaguely disliked her in the beginning of the book and by the end marveled at her strength and dignity. Still, no one's story is PERFECTLY tied up and that it somehow perfect.

If I only ever read one book about baseball in my life, I'm glad it was this one.

Without rehashing the plot as many other reviewers here have, let me say that as a gay baseball fan, I loved this book. Not only did I laugh and cry, but the very second I finished it, I turned back to page one and started all over again - something I've never done before. This book belongs in your library because you WILL want to read it again. I re-read it every summer at least once.
I know nothing about baseball but I still manage to enjoy this hilarious, witty and well written satire. My only complaint is that it lacks in-depth examination of the love between Randy and DJ. After all the cover does spell out that this is a love story.
Or does the writer imply something else. Some of the side characters are well developed, in particular the Egyptian psycharist.
Overall the story is great fun!
I smiled almost the entire time I was reading it. Hope they film it someday.
This is a heart felt and humorous story. It is a true love story without the outright sexual descriptions found so often in M/M literature. The characters faced the truths of the culture at the time and survived. I loved the tongue in cheek humor and thought that a lot of the situations endure today.
Major league shortstop Randy Dreyfus has a problem. The blond haired blue eyed all American hero with a hot wife and two kids realizes he has an obsession with his team-mate, second-baseman D.J. Picket. Actually doing something about his infatuation is unthinkable. His team is in the running for the pennant, and even a whiff of scandal would put an end to his career. Yet Randy can’t get D.J. out of his mind and refuses to ignore the pull of the other man.

Although written in the late 1980s, well before the current wave of out sports players, the situations faced by the protagonist in this story still feels quite relevant today. The writing flows well and the story can easily be understood even if you’re not an ardent baseball fan.

The main characters are surrounded by a rich supporting cast. These tend to be stock characters, such as the hard-bitten private investigator, ever-optimistic agent, and others, but the author plays them quite well. He conveys enough of the archetype so that you will almost immediately feel you know them.

Curiously, the main characters are significantly less well-defined. We spend a lot of time inside Randy’s head, but we never learn what might have caused his sudden desire to ‘switch teams’ let alone how he really feels about. The object of Randy’s affection, D.J., is even more of a mystery. He is perhaps the most normal, well-adjusted character in the book, but we learn almost nothing about him. It’s almost as if the author is more comfortable with stock characters than with writing about real people with real emotions.

This is still an enjoyable read, but it’s one of those books that leaves you wondering about a lot of things that could have been better developed and would have made it so much better.
I loved this book. It came to my attention when I read a review of The Art of Fielding and the reviewer suggested The Dreyfus Affair as an alternative. Even though the Dreyfus Affair is dated now (Pia Zadora references?? Oy!), I enjoyed the story and I loved watching Randy fall in love with DJ. A very sweet book.
This is a delightful love story about a short stop and his second baseman, the only fault of which is...the ending is SO happy. Excuse me, but there will be a black man (and probably a white woman as well) in the White House before Major League Baseball accepts homosexuiality among its own. Lefcourt, writing in 1992, thought, well, maybe if I set the story in 1998 (which he does!)-maybe...it could happen then. Well, it's 2006, and it hasn't happened yet. Give it another 30 years. MLB..er, SUCKS!

6/5/13 I didn't mean to imply that there had never been openly gay Major League baseball players---but I didn't know there had! They did NOT live happilly ever after, during or after their brief playing careers. Both Glenn Burke and Billy Bean (spelled without a final "e"!) were openly (or partly openly)gay during their careers. To clear up any confusion on one point Billy Beane, about whom an excellent film about his managing the Oakland A's, "Moneyball," was made, was NOT gay, but almost shared a name with Bean, who was.
