Dear America The Fences Between Us Kirby Larson 9780545224185 Books

This book details the life of a middle school girl as her father, a minister to a Japanese congregation, deals with the discrimination against the innocent ethnic Japanese during World War II. This book does put you in the girls shoes, trying to understand and deal with the effects of her Brother being in Pearl Harbor during the attack, and her fathers congregation being confined in Minidoka in Idaho.
I think this book would be best understood by a child of about 10 years and up. This book should be accompanied by discussions with adults about why some of Piper's classmates were so cruel to their Japanese classmates, and why some of the internees volunteered to fight for the United States.
This book is much longer than many of the other Dear America books I've read and contains more pages at the end about the history surrounding the story, so if you plan to read it, give yourself extra time to finish.

Dear America The Fences Between Us Kirby Larson 9780545224185 Books Reviews

I love all of the Dear America books, I've read most of them multiple times over the years! My only complaint about this particular one is they didn't talk about what became of Margie and Stan in the epilogue! That made me sad, did she ever see her husband again?
I enjoyed reading in, it was easy reading and something I could relate to!
I love all the dear america books!
My daughter read this book and she thoroughly enjoyed this. It is a fairly easy to read. This book describes how, after the attack of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese were treated harshly in this country, especially in the northwestern states of the U.S. She had never heard about this topic before and was quite intrigued and interested about it. Because of this book, she is planning to write a research topic about the Japanese camps in America. Great book for history lovers!
I like these small historical fiction books.
I happened to come across "Dear America" books and started reading them. At first I was skeptical about the books and didn't think they would be historically accurate and describe life how it was. Well I was wrong! It turns out all the information was accurate and I felt like a 14 year old girl back in time. I was surprised how life really was back before my time. I highly recommend this book to teenage girls, even young adults who love history just as I do!
Our nine year old daughter navigated this moving and exceedingly tragic account of America's internment camps for Japanese Americans during World War Two and the prevalent racism of the era. Told through the experiencs of a girl whose father endured that racism in order to minister to the Japanese Americans imprisoned by their own country.
