I enjoyed the book but there's not a lot of input in it from the band (or considering the author's fanboy dismissal of a definite article, let me rephrase that last bit as "not a lot of input in it from band"). It's very much the story of a band once removed, with the majority of remembrances coming from people who were pretty close to the Pixies but seemed to be giving their opinion of what happened rather than a definitive account. What's of value in the book is a tangible sense of how a "scene" feels (in this case the Boston music scene of the late '80s). I really enjoyed the early accounts of how Fort Apache Studios came to be and the recollection of the clubs and early community, but that could have been a book about any band; this book just happened to be anchored on the Pixies as its focal point.

Fool the World Josh Frank 9780312340070 Books Reviews

Well put together in the style of Please Kill Me which is basically a linear compilation of quotes from those involved describing anecdotes and the chain of events that was the story of this great band. Commentators include everyone from the Pixies themselves to their peers like J Mascis and Throwing Muses, to those they influenced like Billy Corgan and Courtney Love to their engineers/producers like Albini and Gil Norton. As well as those that discovered and signed the band. A fascinating read for anyone who appreciates the Pixies and the amazing music they created. Very candid and enjoyable read.
I'm currently in the middle of reading this excellent interview-based book by Josh Frank, who's original intention was to conduct interviews about the Pixies in hopes of constructing a musical based on Charles "Black Francis" Thompson, the Pixies' lead singer. The project then moved, on the suggestion of Frank's mother, towards a book culled from the numerous interviews Frank did with the members of the Pixies, various recording industry staff (4AD, producers, mixers, recording studio heads, etc.), family, and fellow musicians (especially the very-important-to-the-Pixies-story Throwing Muses). Fool the World becomes a documentary about the Pixies in the literal sense, and what really makes FTW shine are these included third-party observations which bring both the scene (or lack thereof) and band to life. This removes a sense of myopia which most band interviews and their interviewees fall prey to.
One of the best music books out there.
Could not put it down. Essential rock history here. A must for all real fans. A little dated now though. All of the information is 10 years old at least. Much has happened since then, such as a great new album and musical chairs on the bass. Needs a revised second-edition version, but aside from that, all the "classic era" Pixies history is here
long live the pixies, this book gives you a look into rock and roll of the 90's, this is a must have for a pixies fan!
Pixies one of my favorite bands seen them a couple times a keep for sure
I discovered the Pixies “middle-out,” by falling in love with the Breeders and Belly and following the thread. It was amazing reading this account, which managed to incorporate all three groups, in addition to Throwing Muses, which I came to love in the same search. Nobody that was paying attention in the ‘90s should ignore this, or Jen Trynin’s excellent “Everything I’m Cracked Up To Be.”
I enjoyed the book but there's not a lot of input in it from the band (or considering the author's fanboy dismissal of a definite article, let me rephrase that last bit as "not a lot of input in it from band").
